Just a few brief notes on what we did in the session, and the order we did them in, happy creating!
Beginners class Saturday 9th April 2011
*Chose two contrasting colours.
*With 2 'logs' from each colour we made a jelly roll cane (the swril pattern), around 8cm long and set aside.
*With another 2 'logs' from each colour we made a bullseye cane (sold middle wrapped in contrasting colour)
*The log was wrapped in two or three layers of colour, from the logs which were left from each colour, some
thinner layers of either black or white were added to give more detail and definition too. (Don't forget to reserve
some colour for packing and wrapping.
*After wrapping until the desired look was acheived, we 'reduced' this cane until it was at least three times the
length of our jelly roll centre.
*Three lengths of this cane were cut the same length as the jelly roll middle, and each one sliced it half
lengthways to create six petals.
*These petals were then carefully added around the centre section, smoothing as we went, (sometimes it may be
that only 5 petals will fit)
*The new flower shaped cane was then packed by putting little logs of clay in the gaps to protect the petals
from becoming mis-shapen.
*To finish the cane we then wrapped the whole thing in a thin layer of clay.
*To reduce, we created an hour glass or dumbell shape first and then carefully rolled to the desired length.
By reserving pieces of work at various points you can produce a variety of different sizes of cane to decorate different sizes of beads or buttons.
Cool your work if possible to make it easier to handle.
Cut in a rolling motion
Have fun with the swirling technique too... hands at roughly a 45degree angle, larger cirlces getting smaller as
your work begins to swirl.
I hope this quick run through is helpful.
I have also added a copy of the handout too
All the best with all your work, feel free to call or email me if you have any questions.
Best Wishes
Karol : )
